Parents are welcome to come partake in the fun. We are teaming up with Family Freezed Popsicle Truck again this year! Junior High students are welcome to purchase items from the food trucks starting at noon. Please send money with your student if they'd like to participate. Prices range from $5-$10 per item for hot dogs, hamburgers, quesadillas, fries, cookie dough, lemonade and more.... Hope to see you there! https://www.yycfoodtrucks.com/international-ukrainian-fine-foods-1 https://www.yycfoodtrucks.com/international-take-it-go https://www.yycfoodtrucks.com/sweet-treats-cookie-dough-yyc https://www.yycfoodtrucks.com/sweet-treats-family-freezed This week is the first annual Diamondshine Fundraiser at Rideau Park School. It has been created and organized by a thoughtful group of grade 8 students and all proceeds go to a fund at the Alberta Children's Hospital for a friend of theirs who passed away for cancer a few years ago named Diamond. They will be selling handmade bracelets and store bought cookies this week at lunch. Please consider donating to this! Big shout out to all our amazing volunteers at Rideau Park School for all that they do. It was our Volunteer Tea yesterday and a lovely afternoon with a tea party theme! Some students helped to make a custom 'Rideau Relaxation' tea blend as a little gift for each volunteer. We hope you enjoy it. Thank you to the volunteers who help look after the maker space all year! We really appreciate you.
There are many projects going on right now in The Space - grade 5's are building a collaborative mini city. It's inspired by a project that the grade 7's did this year and there is a lot of excitement around it! Stay tuned.... Grade 2's are just finishing up their Genius Hour projects and presenting them. One group learned the history behind cupcakes, and then made them from scratch at our school with Mrs.Prangnell. They were delicious! Grade 6's are also finishing up their Genius Hour projects. Last week one group presented their ice cream experiment and made 4 different flavours of hand churned ice cream for everyone to try. We learned about the challenges of making ice cream this way and appreciated the effort from the group. Grade 1's have just begun their very first Genius Hour! The excitement is real and I can't wait to see how their projects turn out. Puppet shows, little houses, cardboard projects, coding on Scratch Jr, trying out Make Makey..... Grade 3's will continue with their Genius Hour projects as well. It's Genius Hour madness right now! I have been loving seeing the chicks from Mrs.Prangnell's classroom and watching students with them. What a special experience for our school! Come check them out before they head to Ben's farm soon. In The Space we've been working on so many unique projects. Grade 5's and 4's have been coding by learning how to use Makey Makey - https://makeymakey.com. Grade 5 also did a Pablo Picasso inspired self-portrait art project recently.
Grade 6's just began a new Genius Hour project, and Grade 2's are starting their first ever Genius Hour projects! Grade 3's will be starting another Genius Hour project too. We love Genius Hour and the creativity involved. Students learn to independently research their passion projects and present them in unique ways. Stay tuned for more info! Grade 1's have been enjoying some choice time at various centers in The Space that include building, making, coding, circuits, puppets, sand station, and a specific design challenge each time. With many of the classes we've also worked on creating tiny houses - based on the tiny house phenomenon that's taken over. We looked at why people would use tiny houses and the benefits of them. Then we thought of the design process and how to go about creating small spaces that are functional with everyday items that would be necessary to live with. Check out the pictures below of some awesome tiny houses! There's a funky art exhibit with local artists and creators at Southcentre Mall right now until mid-June called CHROMA -https://www.southcentremall.com/events/southcentre-chroma/ It has been a crazy month! Here are some pictures of projects in the Space. Our recent visit from Brian Keating for Earth Day inspired a few classes to think about how we can redesign our school to be extra environmentally friendly. Students came up with suggestions like having compost bins, paperless days, waste-free lunch days, more garbage bins around the school for less litter, school-yard and community clean-up days, and adding a garden to our school yard. What wonderful ideas!
They also prototyped other ideas like garbage sorter machines, robots that help with recycling, reusable snack bags, and so many more. Check out the pictures below of some ideas and center time exploration. We love to create in The Space! Hope you had a relaxing and restful break! The week before the break was a busy one at Rideau....we had our first Lunch & Listen with a lovely musical group called Amanteduo. Thanks to those who came and rocked out to their tunes. Check them out at the upcoming Little Modern Market - https://www.littlemodernmarket.com/copy-of-winter-edition
We also had our very first Family Coding Night! It was a great time learning about the importance of coding. We played with robots, Makey Makey, and coding games online like Scratch. If you haven't checked out Where on Google Earth is Carmen Sandiego? - go now! Stay tuned for our Mini Maker Faire happening at Rideau during student-led conference next week.... Also, if you're looking for a good read - try Kids These Days by Jody Carrington. I saw her speak this week and she was an inspiration! Highlights from our week - Playing a new game called Head to Head Kanoodle, reading The Promise (a great read about empathy), making calming jars with the teachers, building the highest Post-It note tower competition, Lucky Charms graphing (Mrs.Prangnell has the best ideas), redesigning the start of our mornings to help each and every student get into the 'green zone'.
Don't forget about our Family Coding Night that's happening this Tuesday from 6:30-7:30pm at Rideau Park School in the gym. Can't wait to see you there! This Thursday, March 21st there will be a live musical duo performing their acoustic cover songs in the gym! Don't miss it! They are Amanteduo - https://www.amanteduo.com
I saw them perform recently at Little Modern Market and loved them. I contacted the group to see if they'd perform at our school - and they were more than happy to. We are very excited to check out their concert this week! It will be over lunch hour from 12:05 - 12:50pm. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come join the fun. Bring your lunch to the gym. If you have a special song request for them - see Mrs.Blanchard :) Family Coding Night
Join us for Rideau Park School’s 1st Family Coding Night! Computational Thinking is a problem-solving process that will help prepare children for the future. While it is based on computers, it does not need to be taught or learned on the computer. It is important for children to be able to work with and understand the technology around them. Coding provides our children with the fundamental skills they need to be creators of code; not just consumers of code. It builds numeracy skills, fosters creativity, and helps children become confident problem solvers. Developing computational thinking skills is also part of the new K-4 curriculum that will be implemented in 2020. Bring your family and join us on Tuesday, March 19th between 6:30 – 7:30 pm to try out some exciting hands-on coding activities. We are asking families to sign up on Eventbrite so we have an idea of the number of attendees. https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/coding-at-rideau-tickets-58448961417 We look forward to seeing you there! |
