Wow! We had such a wonderful week in our maker space. The Grade 2's redesigned old toys from home that weren't exciting anymore and came up with some really fantastic ideas to reinvent the toys! The Grade 5's presented some of their Genius Hour projects and I was soooo very proud of them. I couldn't believe the innovative and creative ideas they not only thought of, but also followed through in prototyping or making! We have some real talent at Rideau Park School....watch out for them on Dragon's Den one day soon :) The Space is looking for donations of the following items:
-paper towel and toilet paper rolls -Rainbow Loom kits and elastics that are no longer wanted! -Smaller cardboard such as cereal boxes -little Smarties boxes (Halloween size) for an upcoming project Here's a note from STEM Learning Lab - our Friday after school program at Rideau STEM Learning Lab is a company that promotes student engagement in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. They believe it is critically important for kids to explore, create, play, and make, in order to learn about the world around them. They believe that students learn best when they are engaged in fun, challenge-based, hands-on learning experiences that connect the school curriculum to the real world in tangible and meaningful ways. To do so they offer highly interactive robotics, math and interactive learning camps, to a variety of age groups, focusing on early childhood education. This month, they will be in our school on Friday afternoons from 12:50 - 3:45 for their Friday After School Clubs. The theme for this month is Jr. and Sr. Engineering. This is a fun and interactive STEM camp that engages students in the basics of engineering and design. Students will have fun while completing various guided STEM Design Challenges. In this four session camp, students will complete activities ranging from a lessons in Coding, to creating and launching their very own Stomp Rockets! Kind Club has begun! We meet on Monday's at lunch hour in The Space. The club is open to every grade. We are all about spreading kindness, choosing kindness and helping others. We've done random acts of kindness around the school over the last week and created some lovely signs to inspire others. This Monday we put up kindness BINGO cards around the school to help others set kindness goals.
Our next project is the Popcorn for Paws fundraiser happening next week for The Calgary Humane Society. We have a long list of projects and opportunities we'd like to take on! If you'd like to be part of the club, just see Ms.Blanchard or pop an email to [email protected] if you have any questions about our club Kind Club is doing a fundraiser for The Calgary Humane Society! We want to help this empathetic, local organization and their work with animals in need. We will be selling Kernels Popcorn next week at lunch hour on Monday (29th), Tuesday (30th) and Wednesday(31st). There will be a variety of flavours for $2.50 a bag. Come by and help support The Calgary Humane Society! Today the grade 7 SMATH class was inspired by Andy Goldsworthy - a nature artist and photographer from Scotland who creates breathtaking art pieces out of natural materials. His work takes time, a lot of effort, and resiliency when he's working outside in nature with natural materials. It's quite unbelievable what he can create! We looked at his photographs, watched a few videos of his work in action and then we went outside to make our own creations! Check out the gallery below to see the beautiful artwork.... https://www.theartstory.org/artist-goldsworthy-andy.htm Hi I'm Allegra and I'm Hannah. And we are guest bloggers for this week. We are looking for some donations in The Space like recycled material such as cardboard, paper towel rolls, cereal boxes, egg cartons, chop sticks and anything else you think we could reuse! We're also looking for any Rainbow Loom supplies to set up in our crafting station.
Today we had an awesome reveal from the item in the Curiosity Case. It was Tibetan chimes that are used for meditation. Hope you enjoyed this weeks blog! See you next time! What a busy week we had here at The Space. We had a bridge building challenge, Genius Hour, discovery time, Kind Club and today we had a surprise assembly to say goodbye to Ms.Doyle. It was put on by her grade 8 students and they did such a fabulous job. We ended it with everyone having a cookie to cheers her and wish her all the best in her new adventures. Here's another message from our lovely guest bloggers..Hello fellow Makerspace Readers! How was your Thanksgiving!
Last week we got a major haul! We got a puppet theatre that is wonderful because we had quite a lot of puppets. We also got a new chalk board and new toy food sets! Thanks for reading the Makerspace blog!!! From The Maker girls- Kieran and Baye Thanks so much to the group of grade 5 students who help to make The Space a better place, especially on Tuesday's at lunch hour. They have wonderful ideas and we can't wait to start a few pop-up lunch hour sessions led by them....possibly slime making! Another shout-out is deserved to a few fantastic grade 6 students who help to clean up and organize The Space when we need it. We are very lucky to have such thoughtful and caring students at Rideau. Lastly, don't forget to follow us on Twitter @therideauspace Thank you so much to the volunteers who help us in The Space! We truly appreciate you and all that you do.
